As part of the body of work for an experimental research seminar on digital methods in ceramic fabrication, this installation of porcelain, clay, steel and copper leverages strengths of both the digital and the tactile in form generating processes.

Porcelain and clay tiles are slipcast from CNC-routed plaster ingots. Toolpaths from the router are legible in the porcelain, which is translucent, when lit from behind.

Nodes in the tiles bulge to create spaces for LED lighting, and the four distinct edges of the tile's bounding box nest when tessellated.

The armature for the unit pieces comprises a set of steel arms and ball joints flexible in all axes---and allows the tiles to be rotated and transformed to fit together in all possible permutations.

A copper dish assembly hammered from a parabolic CNC-cut wooden mold is visible through the central void in the tiles, reflecting back light from the LEDs housed in their nodes. thing.jpg aggregation.jpg closeup.jpg strategy.jpg fields.jpg
